Love from A-Z
“𝗠𝗮𝘆𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀—𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗱𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂.”
𝐿𝑜𝑣𝑒 𝐹𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝐴 𝑡𝑜 𝑍 is one of those rare deep-yet-delightful books that provides 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗹𝗶𝗺 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. The title refers to the dual perspective narrative that is half-written in journal form by the two mixed-race Muslim protagonists:
★ 𝗔𝗱𝗮𝗺 (Chinese and Finnish 🇨🇳🇫🇮)
★ 𝗭𝗮𝘆𝗻𝗲𝗯 (Pakistani and Guyanese 🇵🇰🇬🇾).
Their first encounter is at Heathrow Airport in London, as they await their flight to Doha for the Easter holidays. Funnily enough, they are both flying out for vastly different reasons: Zayneb is off to stay with her aunt following unfair 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝘂𝗹𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗜𝘀𝗹𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗽𝗵𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿, and Adam is returning home to Doha to be reunited with his family while 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘀. The moment they arrive, their paths intertwine once more, and it readily becomes apparent that their chance encounter wasn’t really chance at all... 💭
𝗜𝘀𝗹𝗮𝗺 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀’ 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀. Zayneb’s steadfastness in the face of adversity and submission to her faith, as well as her staunch opposition to injustice was empowering and heartwarming. Similarly, Adam’s profound strength in light of his debilitating condition and his dedication to his family and faith made the story incredibly touching and that much more personal.
In all, Ali has done a superb job at providing not only a plethora of wonderfully relatable characters, but an 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗹𝗶𝗺 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 that isn’t horribly cringe, boringly cliché, or uncomfortably lustful. 5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
