Once Upon an Eid
Once Upon an Eid is a magical anthology that vibrantly encapsulates the essence of the Muslim festival of Eid. Showcasing the sparkling diversity of our Ummah, the myriad of touching stories are a great reminder of how Eid is always a blessed day, even if it doesn’t always feel special. 💫
Starring #OwnVoices Muslim authors, the range of stories were varied and poignantly addressed important themes and issues whilst remaining lighthearted. Stories included joyful brownie baking blunders, a young converts first Eid, the delicate restoration of Eid festivities at a refugee camp, Eid in light of divorce, and a young Muslimah’s brave decision to begin wearing the hijab! The stories were equally enjoyable and reminded me of my own childhood.
I liked that the author prefaced the book by describing what Eid actually is, how it’s celebrated by billions of Muslims around the world, and how festivities and customs vary from place to place. What I especially appreciated was how the authors aptly intertwined morals and essential Islamic principles such as faith, generosity, acceptance, and love into each story.
“Picture Eid for the first Muslims who came to American shores—came so long ago.
Close your eyes and picture them
in ships,
in chains,
enslaved.
Pictures
in their minds,
image after image of homes overseas,
of Muslims celebrating,
praying and living free
in the lands of Mansa Musa and the mosques of Sankoré.” 🕌
This is a fun and informative read for all ages, races, and religions. 😊.
5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
