Why are Megan, Oprah, Kamala Harris & Michelle Obama silent about Palestine?
When Meghan described the racism she experienced in the UK, Muslims all over the world sympathised and supported her. We showed our solidarity with a woman of colour by posting on our social media. We applauded Oprah for speaking out against racism. So why are both Meghan Markle and Oprah Winfrey completely silent about the racist state of Israel? Why are they not outraged by the inequality and prejudice that exists in Israel?
When election time came in the US Muslim women were tirelessly using Instagram, TikTok etc to encourage each other to vote for Kamala Harris, we should support her because she is a BAME liberal progressive woman. She supports women's rights! So now that she is in office, is she supporting her fellow Palestinian BAME women? Why does female empowerment not extend to the women of Gaza who are being killed in their homes by Israeli bombs?
How many Muslim women think Michelle Obama is awesome, bought her autobiography, love the charity work she does for deprived children? But she's another famous woman of colour who has not explicitly condemned the illegal occupation of Palestine and the massacres taking place. If we follow them, share their pregnancy photos, promote their books, read the books they recommend, vote for them, donate to their charities. Then we should also ask them why they don't care about our Muslim causes.
It's time we no longer blindly follow public figures who pay lip service to justice, anti-racism and women's rights and ignore the injustice and racism happening in Palestine right now!
